They could also gain access to your PC and steal files and folders of data. Manufacturers leave the configuration “open” so that the user can easily set up the router and get it up and running quickly. However, there is a risk if the router is not secure have it checked out
Fraud danger in a secong-hand PC
Second-hand computer hard drives auctioned on eBay, some for as little as £10, often contain valuable data for criminals. Most people buy them simply to upgrade their computers, but they can give access to bank statements, tax returns, correspondence relating to investments or savings and even account numbers, Passwords and pin numbers.
And at car boot sales up and down the country every day of the week, thousands of laptops or PCs will change hands. Again the danger is that buyers could be criminals looking for information stored on the hard drives.
It is estimated that half of all computers changing ownership contain data useful to criminals. The most valuable is information that links individuals' names with their addresses and dates of birth as this allows fraudsters to make false applications for credit.
Software that wipes hard drives is available, often for free, from a variety of sources, but not all programs are trustworthy. We at Haworth Computers use a drive-wiping system called blancco used by government and defence industries.
For ordinary users who fear for their data but who do not want to pay for it to be removed professional, then the answer is to put a hammer to the hard drive
'Whether it's in a laptop or desktop, the hard drive is easy to locate and remove, Disconnect the power source first. Then there are normally two or four screws to undo to get inside the casing. The drive will look like a silver or white box the size of a slim paperback. Slide it out of the machine, take it into the garage and smash it to bits.'
In your local city or town there will be a place were you can take your old computer, here in Hull a company called Refurbit located under Brighton street flyover on Hessle road will take it off you, Allowing your old pc to find a new home in Africa, once all the data has been removed from the hard drive.
